Investing in NCD Prevention and Management: Improving Health and Economic Outcomes

50.00

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have emerged as a major public health and economic challenge, accounting for nearly 74% of global deaths and a significant share of mortality in India. The burden of NCDs—such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, and mental health conditions—not only affects health outcomes but also leads to substantial economic losses and high out-of-pocket expenditure, particularly among vulnerable populations.

In India, the rise in NCDs is driven largely by modifiable risk factors including tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, and harmful alcohol consumption. While the government has introduced key initiatives such as the National Programme for Prevention and Control of NCDs (NP-NCD) and Health & Wellness Centres under Ayushman Bharat, challenges remain in terms of inadequate funding, workforce shortages, and gaps in implementation.

The article highlights the urgent need for increased investment, stronger health systems, and a multi-stakeholder approach involving government, civil society, and communities. It emphasizes a shift towards prevention through health promotion, self-care, and addressing social determinants of health. A comprehensive, community-driven strategy is essential to reduce the growing NCD burden and ensure sustainable health and economic outcomes.
