E-Cigarettes: A Growing Public Health Challenge Among Indian Youth
₹50.00
E-cigarettes, or Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS), are rapidly emerging as a significant public health concern, particularly among youth. Marketed as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes, they have gained popularity due to appealing flavours, attractive designs, and misleading perceptions of reduced harm. However, growing scientific evidence highlights serious health risks, including respiratory and cardiovascular issues, neurological effects, and increased likelihood of transitioning to conventional smoking.
In India, despite relatively low national prevalence, recent studies indicate rising use among adolescents and young adults. Aggressive marketing strategies—especially through social media and influencers—play a key role in promoting these products and normalizing their use among youth.
Although India has implemented a comprehensive ban on e-cigarettes through the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act (2019), challenges persist due to online sales, cross-border advertising, and weak enforcement. The article emphasizes the need for stronger regulation, better monitoring of digital platforms, and increased awareness campaigns. It calls for a comprehensive approach combining policy enforcement, community awareness, and youth-focused interventions to prevent a new generation from nicotine addiction.
