Due to its geographical location, large coastal areas as well as mountainous region, India is vulnerable to natural disasters. Thankfully, with last few decades of experience, we have developed significant expertise in effectively dealing with disaster preparedness, post-disaster relief as well as long term rehabilitation. Country’s handling of large scale disasters like Odisha Super Cyclone, Bhuj Earthquake, Tsunami as well as localised disasters in Baramulla, Kashmir and coastal areas in Odisha are good examples of our effective handling of the situation. In the backdrop of Sendai Declaration, it is important for us to further strengthen our infrastructures, knowledge as well as the community capacity to handle future disasters. This issue of Health for the Millions captures some important insights into various dimensions of disasters and how to cope with them more effectively in the future.
